Sorinkan Dojo, West End

The Sorinkan (Creative Forest Hall) is the dojo of Sensei Terry Foster. The name was given by Yonemoto Sensei reflecting Terrys interest in trees, plant and shrubs often a topic of conversation between them on uses and benefits. It also reflected Terry Fosters work as a tree surgeon.

In Yonemoto Ha Goju Ryu inspiration often comes from nature. For example parallels are drawn between trees and the human body. The stability of the roots, the strength of the trunk and the whippiness of the branches as to how the legs, body and arms are held in karate.

Terry has a focus on physical fitness for martial arts and the health benefits this brings. Additionally he encourages students to develop their fighting skills for self defence referred to as Kumite.

Sorinkan Garden Dojo

There is a second location in the garden dojo at the home of Terry Foster also in West End, Southampton where senior students are taught and special lessons held. Students have the oppurtunity to practise at the garden dojo when they advance through the levels.

Having a small intimate garden dojo is typical of Okinawan and Japanese teachers where sturdents are taught in smaller numbers enabling direct tution. This gives increased attention and focus on individuals students.
